Devices of Wonder Magic lanterns and painted film. Four centuries of cinema.
Venaria Reale (Turin), extended until 9 January 2011
After a successful debut in Paris, the exhibition arrives in Italy in the evocative setting of the Reggia di Venaria Reale, in the Rooms of the Arts. The exhibition unfolds across fifteen rooms. The various thematic sections illustrate the fascinating pictorial story of magic lanterns and their connections with cinema – from mute films to the avant-garde and contemporary art. The magic lantern is an optical device that appeared in the second half of the 17th century in the Netherlands, most likely attributed to the Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens. Magic lanterns projected still or animated images against a white screen inside a dark room. The images were painted on glass slides that were generally rectangular in shape. Hand-painting required painstaking precision, because the images had to be accurate to the very last detail, since the projection would blow them up several times. The exhibition is organized into thematic sections that illustrate the main subjects of magic lantern shows throughout their history: Daily Life, Voyages, Science and Teaching, Art and Performances, Religion and Exotericism, a Topsy-Turvy World, Tales and Legends, Abstraction, Eroticism, Ghosts, the Passions of the Soul.
